Is A Foil A Literary Device?
Caliban is ugly, crude, hated by Prospero, not too smart, and an unwilling slave; Ariel is airy, graceful, beloved by Prospero, and serves with his best efforts . Falstaff is the foil to either Prince Hal’s father, Henry IV, in the King Henry plays. As ANX expanded into The Cabinet their foils became Search And Destroy. Both groups have similar beliefs and goals, wanting to take things back to way they used to be, when times were better, but their philosophy and methodology are completely different.
Mercutio is killed by Tybalt, but more subtextually, one could argue that he’s killed by Romeo’s inaction. The main takeaway of the scene is that Mercutio’s boldness juxtaposes Romeo’s cowardice — which ultimately exposes a character flaw in Romeo. Then, experiment with different kinds of foils, such as using round or flat characters, and see which works best for you. When a reader sees a character as a standalone, it may not be easy to see just how their beliefs or behaviors shape their actions. But when another belief system or behavior shows up, the reader can see more clearly how the main character’s thoughts lead to decisions.
Throughout the story, Tobias does decide to fight for what is right, but only because of Tris’ influence. In this way, Tobias acts as a foil to show how brave and strong Tris truly is. In fact, Rowling makes the foil to Harry very clear in the fifth book of the series. In this novel, a prophecy is discovered about the boy who can take down Voldemort.
Tally juxtaposes the two characters through simple, unspoken characterization. Romeo and Juliet is another one of Shakespeare’s plays that’s full of foil characters. The foil characters in Romeo and Juliet are some of the most famous of all time.
He also tries to pick a fight with Benvolio, ‘Turn thee… Look upon thy death. ‘ Benvolio does draw his sword, but attempts to maintain the peace. Flat characters are two-dimensional in that they are relatively uncomplicated and do not change throughout the course of a work. By contrast, round characters are complex and undergo development, sometimes sufficiently to surprise the reader. Anakin “Darth Vader” Skywalker’s son Luke is a foil of him and visa versa. Also a Foil may be an antithesis character, a supporting character or an intimate counterpart.
Brutus, in contrast, is bent on relying on his own reason, and his awareness of his dignified obligations as a Roman, to do the inevitable. Moreover, Brutus is a foil to Antony because Brutus’s honesty and simplicity are in clear contrast to Antony’s qualities of deception and over-ambition. Foils need to be seen together; the interaction between the contrasting characters is what makes this trope work. A pair of foils may be strangers when the story begins, but they need to come together at some point in the story and let their opposed personalities shine through. Otherwise, we just have a pair of characters with different personalities.
